As one of the most used-family centers in a home, the functionality of a laundry room or mudroom is essential to efficient workflow in a household. One of our clients had a home on the east side of Carmel, built in 1995. The small laundry room and mudroom closet were no longer able to support the increased needs of their growing family. The goal of the remodel was to find a creative way to increase the size of the laundry room and create a new, enlarged mudroom with lockers for the children.
DESIGN PHASE: Our designers initial focus was on how best to enlarge the small area, while keeping in mind the uses the clients had planned for the space. The solution was to completely remove a wall and doorway that separated the laundry room from the mudroom. The hallway coat closet was also removed, as the clients wanted to move to a locker configuration. By eliminating these elements, there was enough space to create a whole new room – a combination laundry room/mudroom that better served the family’s needs.
PROJECT SCHEDULE: The design phase included presenting several scaled drawings to the homeowners, including floor plan and elevation views. This phase lasted two weeks and included guiding the homeowners though cabinet, flooring and lighting choices. To accommodate the family schedule, the project was spread out over a two-week period. Extensive dust-prevention measures were taken as the demolition and construction were performed.
FINAL PRODUCT: The new laundry area included an LG front-loading washer and dryer with a beveled-edged laminate countertop that provided a convenient folding area. The white cabinetry to the side and above the washer/ dryer was custom built to fit the exact dimensions of the area. The tall cabinet provided storage for brooms and mops, while the upper cabinets provided hidden storage. The clothing rod above the washer/dryer offered a convenient hanging spot for clean clothes. The lockers were 20” wide and included beadboard backing, coat hooks and an 18” high bench for the children to change shoes. Finally, the existing ceramic tile flooring was removed and replaced with 20”x20” porcelain floor tile, and all the new cabinetry and trim were painted with two coats of white semi- gloss paint.
Our clients were very pleased with the increased functionality and style of their new laundry/mudroom. We were able to help them better use the space they already had, through thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship.
