2014 Year in Review: Kitchen Remodeling Trends

We were so fortunate to have been able to turn kitchen remodeling dreams into reality for our amazing clients in 2014. Many new trends including bold colors and contemporary vs. traditional designs emerged in 2014 to create some of our most visually stunning kitchens to date! Take a look back at our kitchen remodeling year in review to fuel your inspiration for your future home remodel.

The Kitchen Island Serves as the Hub:

As lifestyles continue to get busier, homeowners are ditching the kitchen eat-in area and swapping it out for an expanded island with integrated seating. The new design of kitchen islands makes it easy for homeowners to prepare meals while entertaining guests, helping kiddos with homework, managing household bills, working from home, etc. Installing islands in a contrasting color also continued to be a big trend in 2014.

Apron-Front Sinks:

Oh how we love apron-front sinks (also known as farmhouse sinks) not only for their good looks, but also because they make washing those dreaded large pots and pans easy. Although the farmhouse/apron-front sink has traditional roots, they still work in contemporary kitchens. The vast selection of finishes including (but not limited to) bamboo, stainless steel, granite, marble, etc creates the perfect opportunity to make the sink another focal point in the kitchen. If you’re opting to keep your existing cabinets, consider a retro-fit model.

Dramatic Tiled Backsplash:

Tiled backsplashes really took off in 2014. Adding tile to your kitchen backsplash is a great way to express your personal style, add visual impact and polish off the look of your kitchen. For a more dramatic look, consider carrying the tile to the ceiling (to add height) or choose a different installation pattern like a horizontal or vertical straight lay, herringbone pattern or a staggered pattern. tile-backsplash-1 tile-backsplash-2 tile-backsplash-3

Separate Beverage Station:

Many of us will find ourselves storing beverages in the garage fridge to allow more space in the kitchen fridge for fresh produce. Although this is a great storage solution, it sure does make it inconvenient for friends and family to make the hike into the garage for a drink. To alleviate this nuisance, many homeowners are now installing separate beverage stations in their kitchens. If you have limited space, consider installing a beverage fridge in your island.Beverage-Station-1 Beverage-Station-2

Decorative Pendant Lighting:

Pendant lighting anchoring the kitchen island definitely hit new highs in 2014. In the past, pendant lighting was more of a functional addition. Today, they still provide function, but they also add more style and charm to the kitchen. Installing bold and decorative pendants is a great way to make the island the main focal point of the kitchen while also creating a more stylish space. pendant-1 pendant-2 pendant-3
